Chapter Twenty- Four
Humalia, Ruins of Providence.
D amn it!" Johnny cursed as the wrench slipped and his knuckles banged against the hard edge of the engine compartment. He walked away from the generator, shaking his smarting hand. This was shaping up to be another day of aggravation and disappointment. First, he and Lanalai had argued about how much longer they needed to remain hidden here in this desolate place. Again. Amy had overheard the fight and had run off into the ruins. Again. And now the damned generator that supplied electricity to the lab had broken down. Again. Just another typical day in the tragic life of Johnny Hiro, he thought. He quickly to ok that back though. His life was better than it could have been ; it was Lanalai and Amy who were suffering tragically. All he could do was try to keep them together, but that was becoming harder to do with each day. This place, which had once given meaning to his life, was now smothering it. The walls seemed closer and the ceilings lower, but instead of drawing his family together, the closeness seemed to be pushing them apart.
He walked around the decrepit old machine, trying to staunch the trickle of blood that was running down the back of his hand. He stared at the uncooperative device with disdain and frustration. He had been experiencing extreme mood swings lately, and recognized that he was now on the verge of another violent outburst. Looking down at his injured hand, he decided to go back to his and Lanalai 's room and get the first aid kit. The bleeding was starting to slow, but the exposed white tissue on the knuckles of his middle and ring fingers might need some attention. He tossed the wrench into the tool box that he had brought in from the lab and headed back down the darkened corridor to the living area. As he passed by the sandstone walls, he took little notice of the drawings and writings that had been placed there centuries ago. He and Baret had tried time and time again to decipher them, but they were not like anything found anywhere else on the planet. He soon stepped out into the lab, where all of the equipment lay dormant, deprived of power.
This desert starves everything; even machines aren't immune to the Dambudzo's stranglehold. We are not going to survive here much longer, I 'm afraid. The thought was similar to other thoughts that haunted his mind. Even his dreams were full of cataclysmic visions for his family. He did his best to push them aside while he was awake, which only made the dreams more intense. He walked along the wall of now- quiet computer banks, thankful that the lights
